The new generation of speed cameras that are able to detect several driving offences
Present speed cameras have the ability to recognise number plates and spot speeding offenders. The new generation Advance Safety and Driver Support for Essential Road Transport (ASSET) cameras in addition to licence plate recognition and speeding detection can also check if the car has a valid car insurance and tax and recognise if the driver is not wearing a seatbelt or if tailgating from up to 150ft away. The cameras are a welcome safety measure to make Britain’s road safer and the AA is supporting it.
The builders of these cameras are also developing a device that can spot if a vehicle is overloaded. The system will use pads in the road that can detect if vehicles are overloaded even at high speeds.
