Polly the pony ‘gave birth during riding lesson’
Equine insurance customers might be touched by the story of Polly, the pony that gave birth in the middle of a riding lesson.
Staff at Fearns Equestrian Centre in Rossendale were unaware the mare was pregnant until the last minute, reports the Bolton News.
The 18-year-old was being ridden by youngster Bethany Cuthbertson – who has given her first name to the foal – when the equine appeared to be taken ill.
While on the way back to the stables, a parent of one of the children taking part in the class spotted that Polly was giving birth.
Kaye Thompson-Cropper, riding instructor, told the publication: “It was absolutely amazing. One minute she was taking part in a lesson and 20 minutes later we had a foal.”
Earlier this week, vet Jonathan Pycock said in an article for Horse & Hound that those considering whether or not to use a mare for breeding need to check the animal’s physical condition.
For example, pony insurance customers should ensure the equine does not have weak hind legs, because these are put under extra strain when the mare is pregnant.
