Man fined for no boat license
The importance of purchasing the right vessel licence as well as boat insurance online may have been highlighted after a man in Whitton received a fine for breaching registration rules.
Gavin Harwood, who lives in Gosling Road, was caught boating on the River Thames without the correct permit and was fined £327, the Richmond Twickenham Times reports.
Environment Agency lock and weir keeper Peter McLellan noticed that the craft was moored illegally at Teddington lock last October.
Commenting on the verdict, waterways operations manager at the agency Andrew Graham said the fine would be well spent – along with the rest of the funds raised from boat registrations – on the community and the environment.
“It contributes directly to maintaining waterway structures such as locks and lay-bys, as well as providing facilities like visitor moorings, water points, rubbish and sewage disposal and electric boat charging hook-ups,” he explained.
Registrations run from January 1st to December 31st and must be clearly displayed on a vessel kept on any part of the Thames.
