London’s Cycle Hire Scheme
In Summer 2010 be prepared to see lines of bicycles for hire on the street in central London. The Cycle Hire Scheme aims to encourage people to use the bikes in order to get around London. You will be able to go to a cycle hire docking station and ride to your destination, dropping off your bicycle at any other cycle hire docking station. You therefore do not have to return the bicycle to the original docking station. The scheme is not only hoping to reduce congestion but also to encourage people to do more exercise in our obese-ridden country.
To begin with the scheme will run in the equivalent to zone one in Central London. It is estimated that 6,000 bicycles and 400 docking stations with 10,200 docking points will be needed. The cycle hire will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. If the scheme is successful you can expect to see it expand quickly into the rest of London. The number of docking stations will then increase giving commuters even more choice and flexibility. It is thought that Cycle Hire Scheme is in partnership with the boroughs of Camden, City of London, City of Westminster, Hackney, Islington, Lambeth, The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, The Royal Parks, Southwark and Tower Hamlets to identify locations for the cycle docking stations.
If you currently cycle to the shops, to work or are a leisure user have you thought about the need for bicycle insurance? It is an unfortunate fact that cyclists are often a target for thieves. The British Crime Survey reported that 439,000 bicycles were stolen during 2005-2006. According to the Home Office only 15% of these bicycles were recovered and returned to their rightful owners. E&L offer bicycle insurance for everyone whatever your need or budget. E&L Bicycle Insurance offer 100% cover for fire, theft, accidental loss and damage. As a valued E&L Bicycle Insurance policyholder you will also benefit from worldwide cover, personal accident cover up to £12,500 and public liability up to £1million as standard. Your bicycle will also be covered up to 3 years for new for old cover. There are both leisure and compete policies available to choose from and policies start from as little as £24.50 a year. As an additional benefit to our cycle insurance scheme we have linked with Leisure Lakes to provide E&L Bicycle Insurance policyholders with an additional 10% discount off he purchase of cycles and accessories.
