IAM warns of fatigue for tired caravanners
Many people will no doubt be planning a little getaway over the bank holiday weekends. For caravanners it is a perfect opportunity to enjoy a short break, but the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is urging people to stay alert while on the roads.
With this time of year throwing various weather conditions and particularly bad light at us, the IAM wants people to carefully plan their journey to ensure that we all stay concentrated on the road.
The organisation recommends the following actions to stay safe:
Plan your journey to include a stop at least every 2 hours
Where possible, share the driving with someone else
Make sure you drink enough fluids
Don’t plan to travel late at night if possible
Finally, don’t ignore the warning signs of fatigue – if you feel sleepy then stop and have a walk round or in extreme cases, have a caffeine drink and a sleep for 20 minutes whilst it takes effect.
Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner, said: “If you’re embarking on a long journey, get a good rest and use this advice to help make sure you’re alert throughout.”
