Horse obesity is a growing problem
A study published in journal the Veterinary Record showed that horse obesity affects as many as 1 in 5 horses, a figure which puts horse obesity on a par with human obesity levels.
The study was conducted by a third year veterinary student. The survey looked at the health of 500 general use horses. Asking owners about their horses conditions.
The results of the questionnaire revealed that 1 in 5 of horses are obese.
The researches then selected a random sample of the horses for closer inspection. From this they found that owners tended to underestimate the weight of their horses.
This finding, coupled with the results of the original questionnaire led to the inference that obesity could be as high as 50%.
