Whether you are new to towing or have owned a trailer for several years, the Highways Agency staff are providing an invaluable service at Hickstead this year. They will be on hand to advise visitors on safe horse trailer towing. Get your questions ready as you can have them answered by professionals on the day.
You are in for a treat as they are handing out their new publication – Hitched. This magazine will be handed out free of charge at the Royal International Horse Show which is on 22nd – 26th July 2009.
The Highways agency staff are attending to give out information on road safety, insurance and legal issues to increase knowledge and awareness. This information is relevant not only to horse trailers but to other agricultural trailers and horse boxes – in effect anything that is being towed on a public road.
This campaign has been highlighted as incidents involving vehicles towing account for 43 fatalities and 1,400 injuries on England’s roads annually. It is frightening how many people get behind the wheel with little or no knowledge when they are towing a very heavy trailer which could cause huge damage if handled incorrectly. These figures not only represent horse trailers, but also caravans, boats and horseboxes.
The deputy manager of the Highways Agency in Kent and Sussex, Fliss Derwett commented,”With the holiday season upon us, it is a good time to remind drivers to check and double check their trailers before they take to the roads. That advice applies to anyone planning to travel this summer including those towing anything – including trailers, boats and caravans as well as horseboxes”
