Fundraising event helps contribute to canal barge restoration fund
More money has been contributed to a fund needed to restore a 1934 canal boat back to its original glory.
The barge called Bramble resides in Stourport but cannot be sailed because she is only a shell at present, the Kidderminster Shuttle reports.
Staff at the local Brantano shoe store recently held a ladies' night and raised £51, meaning the £7,000 necessary to carry out the restoration is now in sight.
Once Bramble has been refurbished, owner Stourport Forward will be able to take out canal boat insurance and invite local primary school children to sail on her in order to learn more about the town's history as an important canal port.
Meanwhile, this spring, pupils will be able to go along to the canal in order to see her as she is now.
Stourport originally grew up around its canal basins and was the principal location for the transportation of goods from the canals to the River Severn for 150 years.
