Fire safety talks launched
Sailing enthusiasts may be saved from claiming on their boat insurance if they take part in a new initiative being launched by a team of fire fighters.
Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service are carrying out a number of talks about avoiding blazes onboard vessels.
The scheme has been organised to coincide with Boat Safety Week, which runs from May 30th to June 5th.
Stuart Garner, risk reduction manager for the emergency service team, said: “With so much water around, there can be a tendency to think that there is a reduced risk of fire.”
However, he warned that often vessels are in remote locations, which can mean they are completely destroyed by the time fire crews arrive at the scene.
To reduce the chance of such an incident, Mr Garner recommended installing a smoke alarm and attending an advice session at Goring Lock or Hobbs Boat Yard.
The Boat Safety Scheme suggests fitting detectors is especially important on crafts where there is overnight accommodation.
