Piglet mothered by dog
A story has emerged from China detailing how a farm dog managed to successfully rear a piglet, even providing the piglet with a daily amount of milk. The dog has taken on the mother role and will carry the piglet around in his mouth and even let the piglet snuggle up to him at night! The dog took over from the
piglet’s natural mother after the sow gave birth to twelve other piglets who all subsequently died after the sow failed to provide for her litter. The one remaining piglet has survived by receiving milk from the dog.
Another surrogate mother situation is occurring after a hen has ‘adopted’ ducklings. After the ducklings were left un-hatched, the hen sat on the eggs to keep them warm until they eventually hatched. The ducklings now follow the hen everywhere she goes!
