Discarded tackle causing injuries among wildlife
Anglers have been called upon to think carefully about local wildlife when out fishing at Pittville Park.
Boathouse manager Gene Waterhouse told the Gloucestershire Echo how fishermen who are careless with their tackle are putting the lives of birds at risk.
Discarded fishing cord has already contributed to the death of one swan and there are fears similar incidents could occur.
Cheltenham Borough Council confirmed there have been a number of incidents at the lake in which animals have been injured by lines and hooks left by anglers.
Fishing insurance policy holders that use Pittville Park may notice an increased ranger presence in the forthcoming weeks, as the council has instructed staff to visit the lake twice a day to check for discarded equipment.
The RSPCA also recently urged anglers to take care with their litter, as there is often a rise in related swan injuries during the summer months.
