Excess

A £100 excess is payable for each and every claim except for total or constructive total loss claims. If claims are made under more than one section of cover, an excess will apply to each section of cover under which a claim is made. Claims for damage to underwater gear occurring in tidal waters are subject to a double excess.

The total maximum discount per policy is 20%.

Introductory discounts provided only apply to new policies taken out online.

To be eligible for E&L® Canal and Narrow Boat Insurance the following conditions must be met:

  1. The policyholder is a UK resident aged over 18 years
  2. The length of the narrow boat must not exceed 80ft
  3. Craft must be used for private/pleasure purposes
  4. Craft must be seaworthy
  5. Craft must not carry more than 12 people
  6. The policy application is subject to a flood risk assessment.
  7. You must meet our security requirements

  • Can friends and family use my canal/narrowboat for holidays?
  • Yes, as long as they have your permission and the insurance company has been informed. The maximum number of people insured on the boat at any one time is 12.

  • Do I need to have the craft surveyed to be able to get insurance?
  • If your craft is more than 20 years old you must have a full survey report which is no more than 2 years old and which was carried out by a qualified chartered surveyor whilst the craft was out of the water. You must ensure that any recommendations made following the survey have been fully met. A copy of this must be provided when a policy is set up.

  • Does my insurance cover me if I want to permanently live in my canal/narrowboat?
  • Yes. When you are getting your quote, please make sure that you select yes to the question "will the canal/narrow boat be used as a houseboat, permanent living accommodation or be your home address?"

  • What happens if I lose my keys or someone breaks into my canal/narrow boat, damaging my doors and locks - will this be covered?
  • We cover up to the amount stated in the schedule for the reasonable cost of replacement keys/replacement locks and or the reasonable cost of repair to the locks of the external doors of the craft following accidental loss, damage or theft. This is up to £750.

  • What is the excess on my canal and narrowboat policy?
  • A £100 excess applies to each and every claim except for total loss/constructive total loss claims.   • Personal belongings are covered up to the value of £2500, with a single item limit of £250.

  • The maximum length of the canal or narrow boat is 80ft. Any vessel measuring over this amount in length cannot be insured.
