- Failure of boat engine, ruins yachtsman's dream trip
- August 12, 2009 | 0 Responses
Jonathan Orme-Dawson’s dream trip ended in disaster as his yacht’s engine failed and the boat drifted onto rocks and eventually fell apart. He had only been sailing for two months and had a further 10 months worth of sailing to be done around the coastlines of the UK.
The shaken yachtsman commented, “It was a trip of a lifetime. I planned a year to be away but that has been cut short now by 10 months I’m afraid”. The yachtsman was setting sail from Lyme Regis to West Bay when the power cut out on his boat during Friday evening. The weather conditions were bleak, with heavy fog restricting the yachtsman.
Jonathon was rescued by a coastguard helicopter on duty, but unfortunately nothing could be done to save the yacht. As the 24ft yacht crashed onto the rocks, it fell apart and eventually sank deep into the ocean. The newly restored yacht took with it all of Jonathon’s personal belongings including his passport and all his money. “I’d saved up for a long time but it’s all floating out there now I’m afraid – the money as well” he said.
Even though the experienced yachtsman had spent years restoring the boat and was carrying money and many personal belongings, he did not insure the yacht.
Unfortunately this article shows the terrible consequences of not having insurance. By making sure that you are financially protected by taking out boat insurance with a company such as E&L insurance, you would not find yourself financially out of pocket should a situation arise damaging your boat or belongings.
E&L boat insurance offers insurance for all types of crafts including canoes, kayaks, sailboards, canalboats, narrowboats, rowing boats, sailing dinghies, motorboats and speedboats.
E&L Boat Insurance offer low cost comprehensive insurance, covering both the marine craft, personal belongings, you and your guests as well as offering public liability.
E&L Insurance are launching a new yacht scheme shortly so visit www.eandl.co.uk/boat to find out more!
