- Would you pass your driving test if you had to re-take it?

Staggering statistics from a recent survey revealed only 2 in five Brits would actually pass their driving test if they were to re-take it. The snapshot research looked at five participants, both male and female and aged between 21 and 65. The modern day driving test is supposedly becoming increasingly stricter and harder to pass. To pass the test the driver must not acquire more than 15 ‘standard’ faults and no serious faults. The five participants in the study surprised the examiner, Bob Milliard and he reported that the drivers forgot to check blind spots and their mirrors. These are two simple car rules which you learn from the start. The risk of forgetting to check can lead to accidents and injury. Another observation that Bob noted was that most drivers believed that they need to use all their gears when slowing down at a junction or a roundabout for example. Driving test examiners have however believed that the best practice is to skip gears when slowing down so skipping from fourth to second should be second nature to all drivers.
The subjects of the research were a 21 year old woman – failed with 17 driving faults, a 20 year old male driver – 11 faults but got a serious fault for not indicating right at a roundabout, a 54 year old man – 14 faults but these included 2 serious faults for not checking his blind spot and using the gears incorrectly, a 64 year old retired male passed with 11 faults and finally the Which?Car Deputy Editor, a 44 year old female passed with only nine driving faults. Richard Headland, editor of Which?Car said “As the driving test is getting tougher, it’s a good time to reassess your skills – or lack of them. We recommend that even experienced drivers take refresher or advanced driving courses over the years, which not only improve driving but may also lower insurance premiums.”
