Caravans are now very high value commodities, often with caravan owners treating the van, it’s contents and decor as though it were their main home. This may reflect why caravans are such highly sought after vehicles by thieves.
The Serious and Organised Crime Unit recently discovered eight caravans at a leisure park in Mere Brow, Lancashire, that were all reported stolen. The eight caravans between them were valued at over £100,000.
The caravans had been stolen from various locations throughout the UK and were unfortunately sold to innocent members of the public, who knew nothing about the caravan thefts.
It has also been reported by Lancashire police, that in 2008 thirty six caravans were located in Benidorm, Spain and identified as stolen.
When looking for a caravan, especially a second hand one, it is worthwhile checking to make sure you know the full history of the caravan. A spokesperson for Lancashire Constabulary’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit states “we urge anyone buying a second-hand caravan to inspect it in the same way as they would when buying a car. Potential owners are advised to familiarise themselves with the Caravan Registration Identification Scheme (CRIS) and be wary of sellers insisting on cash payments”
As a caravan owner it is worthwhile ensuring that you get adequate caravan insurance. Caravan Insurance is cheap and insurance online premiums with E&L start from as little as £4.10. Insurance will cover you should your caravan be stolen and also provides you with new for old cover as standard.
