- Venomous snake injures dog

Dog walkers are urged to be vigilant as it has been reported that a 3 year old, Springer Spaniel named Dillon has been bitten by a venomous snake. The incident occurred in Bigbury in Devon when the owner and dog were on holiday in the county.
They were out for a leisurely walk with Mr Smith’s wife when they saw a snake bite their dog on the nose. “We were lucky because we spotted the snake so we knew instantly what had bitten him and we managed to get him to a vet quickly.”
“I have never seen an adder before but I will certainly be keeping an eye out for them in future and advise other dog walkers to do so too.” Adders are the only UK’s native venomous snake. They are well known to live in open woodland, hedgerows, moorland, sand dunes, riverbanks and heathland. These areas are all suitable places to take dogs for walks and therefore often attract large numbers of people and dogs. If you suspect that either you or your dog has been bitten by an adder, make sure that you get urgent medical attention.
An adder has a distinctive interlocking dark diamond or zigzag pattern which runs along the length of the snake and quite often ends in a spear shape on the snake’s neck.
Barry Smith would no doubt be claiming on his dog insurance policy for this incident as Dilon required urgent veterinary care. The antivenom, other medication and care all comes at a hefty cost to owners. E&L dog insurance provide up to £6,000 vet fee cover and so you would be content knowing that your dog would receive the very best care and attention if the situation arose. E&L dog insurance policies start from £5.87 a month. Call 08449 809 797 or visit www.eandl.co.uk/dog to take out instant cover.
