The cycle scheme in London is due to open in summer 2010. The idea is that cyclists can borrow bikes from certain docking positions and can return them to a different station. The first 30 minutes of use will be free after paying a £1 access fee. As the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson says “It is amazing how far your bike can take you in 30minutes if you put in a bit of pedal power. To be able to do so on one of our fantastic new bikes is sensational value for money.” Transport for London say that the free 30minute use could get you from Regent’s Park to Notting Hill or from London Bridge to Hyde Park. It will then cost a further £1 for up to an hour, £4 for 90 minutes, £6 for two hours and 24 hour use will be £50 – this is even more expensive then hiring some cars and much more expensive than buying your own bike.

Cyclists are angry that they cannot use Oyster cards at the docking stations however debit and credit cards can be used. John Ackers from Islington Cyclists Action Group said “I think the price structure is good. The fact they will do a cheap rate for 30 minutes sounds good. What surprises me is they are not accepting Oyster for payment, which I thought would be important.”
