- Local sets up a feeding station for birds of prey

A local lady from Lampeter in West Wales has set up a feeding station for birds of prey. She is particularly worried about them in the height of winter as it is often very hard for the birds to find food. Over 75 Red Kites have cottoned onto the fact that the lady has a specific feeding time every afternoon at 3pm. The lady is licensed by the Department of the Environment to feed the birds and started feeding just seven Red Kites in 1994. The number of Red Kites have multiplied and now she expects to see approximately 75 Red Kites every afternoon. She has to provide over 28lb of chopped meat to keep them all happy. “They come rushing at me, completely surrounding me. I protect myself with an umbrella but if it’s too windy I wear an old motorcycle crash helmet which I bought in the market for £2. Last week one walloped me on the bottom – it was sticking out more than I thought.” The lady feeds the Red Kites on chopped meat which is provided free of charge from a local abattoir. Red Kites have been hunted to near the point of extinction in some areas of the UK. The birds of prey have slowly been re-introduced into the wild through projects such as the one at Harewood House in north Leeds, Yorkshire.
