- Irish National Park Horse Nappy Ban

Ireland is famed for it’s picturesque landscapes, wonderful parks and excellent unspoiled scenery. However
it seems The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) have taken things a step too far, by insisting that they will “refuse entry to jaunting car operators…unless they have the required dung catcher device.”
Jaunting cars (operated by Jarvey’s) are in effect horse and carriage and they are popular in the Killarney national park. They ferry tourists along 15kilometres of internal roads within the ‘picture-postcard park’.
Horse dung was the cause of numerous complaints over the last few years, over a million people visit each year and walk the roads, with the NPWS stating “An unfortunate consequence of such a high volume of horses frequenting the park is that the roadways are consistently fouled with horse dung, and has for a long time been a concern from the points of view of environmental, health and safety, aesthetic and tourism grounds.”
The Jarveys, over recent years have made attempts to express that using dung catchers are unsafe and cause unbalance for the horses, however the NPWS stated that they are “in widespread use internationally, from Vienna to Vancouver.”, “It is clear, therefore, that these devices do work and are safe to use.”
The row continues and also sparks concerns with horse owners alike, who raise the question…”should they start clearing away horse dung whilst hacking out?”
In reality this is a small issue in comparison to some of the issues that can take place on a day to day basis, as the owner of a horse or as a horse rider. That’s why specialist companies such as E&L Insurance have horse insurance, mature horse insurance and rider only insurance available.
