At Newcomers week (10th-17th October) hunts across the UK were thrilled to be supported by lots of new hunters whether they were on horseback, on foot or following in their cars. Hunts held 92 ‘open to anyone’ meets which attracted 5,000 new faces to the sport. The Countryside Alliance conduced a survey with hunts across the UK. 93% of hunts in England and Wales said that they have as many if not more subscribers than they did before the Hunting Act came into force in February 2005. 89% think that they have more support from their communities than ever before.
Jill Grieve from The countryside Alliance said “These figures are testament to the hunting community’s grit and determination. Keeping hunting together, breeding hounds, continuing to have employees and keeping the infrastructure and number of days’ hunting has been a priority. There is a feeling that the holding pattern hunts have adopted over the past few years could soon be over and the pantomime of the Hunting Act could be behind us.”
