- Horse rescued from Cornish River
- October 21, 2009 | 0 Responses
Fire crews were urgently called to a river in Bissoe after a horse managed to get stuck in a river. The river is located at the bottom of her field. The mare had been grazing in the field and it is thought that she walked down to the river to get herself a drink of water.
In the process, the banking collapsed underneath her and therefore she was trapped in the water as the remaining bank was far too steep for her to get out of. The river had water up to 4ft (1.2m) which is extremely dangerous for the horse. The animal will have been panicking so it was important to keep the horse as calm as possible whilst the firefighters put rescue lines around the horse.
Once the lines were in place the horse could then be coaxed out. Sean Taylor, from Cornwall County Fire Brigade said “She was unable to get out because the bank was very steep so we cut away part of it to make a more gentle gradient and then coaxed her out using rescue lines.” Once the horse was rescued she was so exhausted that she fell to the ground. The horse was however uninjured by the event and after she had rested for a few minutes, she got up on her on accord.
