- Abandoned dogs receive student's duvets
- October 14, 2009 | 0 Responses
Manchester City Council set up a scheme to encourage students to recycle their unwanted possessions so that they could go to greater use rather than just being wasted. The scheme encouraged undergraduate students to do ‘their bit for the environment’.
Student possessions such as cutlery, crockery and other useful kitchen utensils have been collected and since distributed around the community charity groups. The collection brought in 10 tonnes of paper, card and glass and 50bags of textiles.
Bedding such as duvets, sheets and blankets were collected in their dozens. The bedding filled six large vans. The bedding was taken to animal homes in Harpurhey and Sale, both situated in Manchester.
Lisa Graham from Manchester Dog’s home, said, “The duvets have been put to excellent use by our elderly and injured dogs that require a thicker, softer bed to support their injuries and joints. A big thank you from the dogs and staff at Manchester dogs home to all who donated their duvets.”
The council had sent the details of the scheme to students in May 2009. Nigel Murphy who works in the council’s environment department said that the council are overwhelmed with the response that they have received and that they would like to thank everyone who has contributed to helping other people and animals.
We are a nation of dog lovers and the story confirms this as all the students pulled together to contribute such impressive quantities of unwanted bedding for the local abandoned dogs.
