Mac the Golden Retriever and his owner Margaret Stills were on holiday in the Isle of Wight when the incident happened. Mac saw a rabbit and went chasing after it, he ran through a bush and over the edge of the cliff. But luckily his collar got caught on the cliff face rocks, which broke his fall and probably saved his life.
The Isle of Wight coastguard came to Mac’s rescue and he was rushed to a vet nearby, who diagnosed him with two broken front legs and a collapsed lung. After four days the dog stabilised and was taken to the Broadway Veterinary Hospital in Peterborough, Mac’s local vet. Hayley Stevenson, a senior nurse at the hospital states, ‘we do a lot of fracture repairs at the hospital, but we have never treated a dog like Mac who has been involved in such a terrifying accident’. She adds that despite Mac’s ordeal, ‘he went home last week bouncing around on his splints.’
Mac’s owner, Mrs Stills was reported to be delighted to have her beloved pet returned home. She was very thankful that Mac was wearing his collar, believing he wouldn’t have survived if he had just free-fallen. She adds that it will take 6 months for Mac to recover, and then he will only have 50 per cent use of one of his legs, but that she is so thankful towards to vets for what they have done for him.
