- Rescue Centre nearly full as number of cat adoptions drop
- October 16, 2009 | 0 Responses
The cattery at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in London is nearly at its capacity, there are 175 animals that are waiting for adoption. This is believed to be the highest number in Battersea’s history. The centre has witnessed a dramatic drop in the number of people wanting a kitten or cat. This year there has been a 9 per cent drop in the number of successful re-homing’s when compared with last year. Normally it only takes 27 days for most cats to find an owner, whereas now some could be waiting for over a year for a new home.
This has surprised the staff at the home as there has been an increase of 20 per cent in the number of dogs being successfully re-homed. They are trying to decipher why there has been a decline; they believe potential owners may think that cats are less transportable than dogs so they don’t want to take one on before going on their summer holidays. Ros Davies, a cat re-homer at Battersea also states that, “People might think of Battersea as more of a home for dogs than cats, but cats are just as important and need loving new homes, too”. The home is trying to convince prospective owners to adopt from rescue centres rather than going to a pet shop.
If you have adopted or are looking to adopt a cat or kitten, don’t forget about cat insurance. It will enable you to provide the very best care for your beloved new pet by covering yourself financially against vet’s fees and other eventualities. Visit www.eandl.co.uk/pet today to find out more.
