Survey shows the biggest recorded rise of 11.5% increase in car insurance costs since tracking of quarterly premiums began 16 years ago. This is mainly due to the rise in fraudulent claims according to recent data. ‘During the three months up to the end of June, car insurance premiums went up by 11.5% to £704 for an average annual comprehensive car policy’ according to the AA British Insurance Premium Index. This will particularly affect young drivers, but all drivers fare badly.

‘The latest British Crime Survey, published last week, suggests that crime levels are falling, but crucially, it misses a new 21st-century wave of fraud such as providing false information and claiming for non-existent personal injuries, which just isn’t being picked up’ said Edmund King, AA president.

Cases of insurance fraud have been on the rise since the recession started and are still on the rise. According to ABI, the Association of British Insurers, undetected general insurance claims fraud costs the industry in total about £2bn per year, this will add about an extra £40 a year to insurance premiums paid by all policy holders.
