Angling insurance customers may be shocked to hear how one keen fisherman hooked a potentially record-breaking catch off the coast of Devon.

The Daily Mail reports how Julien Stainer had to enlist the help of a friend after reeling in a 7ft-long conger eel weighing 38lb.

His catch is to be officially weighed and the findings sent off to the Bristol Channel Federation of Sea Anglers to establish if it beats the current record holder.

It is thought the fish weighs two pounds more than the 36lb eel caught in 2008.

Mr Stainer spoke of his delight at catching the beast, describing it as "absolutely stonking".

"Sometimes you can get long and thin ones and sometimes you can get short and fat ones – but this one is special," he stated.

According to the British Conger Club, these types of eels are found all around the British Isles and northern European coastlines.
