Families planning to renew their caravan insurance and embark on a mini-break this festive season may want to take note of one expert's advice on keeping kids entertained.

Liat Hughes Joshi, parenting writer and author of Raising Children: The Primary Years and What to Buy for Your Baby, explained there are several ways to prevent youngsters from getting bored during long journeys.

It was suggested handheld consoles, smartphones and DVD players can all help to distract little ones.

Alternatively, Ms Joshi recommended story CD or tapes for children that get travel sick if they read or look at a screen.

"Relatively cheap activities [such as], colouring and sticker books are ideal, as are travel board games," the specialist added.

Parents were advised to plan ahead for toilet breaks and to allow time for snacks and meals, as children can get irritable when hungry.

When at home, Ms Joshi suggested making Christmas-themed crafts such as paper chains and snowflakes as a good way to entertain youngsters.
