The importance of investing in camping insurance may have been highlighted by the plight of one family who had their equipment stolen.

Ben Stuart, 19, of Gannet Lane in Wellingborough was convicted of stealing a vehicle from a home in Kettering and setting the car on fire, the local Evening Telegraph reports.

He was sentenced to four years in a young offenders institute after it was revealed he had 38 previous convictions.

The owners of the car that was targeted spoke of their joy at the conviction, as their family holiday was ruined due to the vehicle being packed with camping gear ready for departing the following day.

PC Keith Morson, from the police's burglary and auto crime team, said: "This case was particularly upsetting for the victims as they were about to embark on a family holiday when the crime occurred."

The news comes after the Bristol Evening Post recently reported how arsonists destroyed camping equipment belonging to a scout group.
