Golf insurance customers may be interested to hear about plans to extend a course in Lunesdale Village.

The Westmorland Gazette reports how the owners of Casterton Golf Course have submitted a proposal for a nine-hole site on land adjacent to the existing fairway.

John Makinson, who runs the course with his wife Elizabeth, said: “This could be a very exciting new venture and subject to planning it is hoped to have it in operation by 2012.”

He added that the new site would be used for teaching and coaching purposes, as the current land is “not adequate”.

The application has been handed to South Lakeland District Council and is awaiting approval.

However, numerous local residents told the newspaper that they are supporting the plans as it will provide additional recreational space for those living in the village.

Casterton Golf Course was founded more than 50 years ago and underwent a radical overhaul in 1993 to establish a new layout.
