Golf insurance customers who play at Basildon Golf Course may be shocked to hear about its closure.

The local council ordered leaseholder Jack Barker to surrender its hire in a move that is said to have come as a surprise, the Echo newspaper reports.

Kevin Blake, councillor responsible for leisure and arts, said the local authority is hoping to rectify the issues surrounding the running of the course and reopen it soon.

He said: “We have always aimed to give people the best golfing facilities in the country.

“We hope to sort it out as soon as possible. Things are changing on a daily basis.”

Jack Barker is understood to have been given seven days to surrender the lease following the site’s closure.

Basildon Golf Club was erected at the site in 1964 and was originally open to all members of the golfing society that had been founded in the early 60s.
