  • Are you planning a canoeing or kayaking holiday? Here’s a list of some of Europe’s top paddling spots…

    1.    Amalfi Coast, Italy
The Amalfi coast has it all, volcanic archways, winding coastline, terraced vineyards and fishing boats of the Costeria Amalfitano from your own boat. Wander ashore for the occasional gelato, cappuccino and fine seafood dining, then work it off back in the canoe.

    2.    Island Hopping in the Cyclades, Greece
These rocky islands with their deep blue seas and sandy beaches are a fabulous way to explore archetypical Greece. Dine in the whitewashed fishing villages on your way.

    3.  Périgord, France
Fall in love with this land of geese, ducks, cheese, truffles and wine with a journey on the Dordogne and Lot Rivers. Imposing forts and chateaux, medieval villages and farmland will transport you back through the years of French history with every stroke of your paddle.

    4.    Assynt, Northwest Scotland
Pack your raincoat for this hardy paddle through spectacular glacial lochs. There’s some portage involved but the towering peaks, islands of juniper and birch and wildlife will more than take your breath away anyway.

    5.   Cetina River, Croatia
Take in a bit of everything on this river in Dalmatia from rapids and deep ravines in the upper regions to slow lake-like canyons and woodlands. There’s also a smattering of villages to visit.

    6.   Westfjords, Iceland
This mass of fjords, mountains and villages is one of the best places for a paddle in Iceland. Wander the alcoves and valleys carved at the base of sheer basalt mountains.

    7.   River Teifi, Pembrokeshire, Wales
Meander up the River Teifi into the peaceful Cilgerran Gorge and Nature Reserve watching salmon leaping from the water and other wildlife like otters, kingfishers and herons.

    8.   River Obra, Poland
This river offers 165 kilometres of mostly flat water; perfect for beginners, families, groups and even experienced paddlers up for a long ride. Meander the crystal clear lakes of the Lubuskie Lake district, stop in at historic towns and discover the wilds of west Poland by camping riverside.

    9.   North-East Greenland National Park, Greenland
This remote region where few have canoed is not for first timers. Deep fjords, overwhelming ice floes and towering bergs loom off your bow while polar bear and shaggy musk oxen stalk the shores.

    10.    Orb River, France
Discover southern France and escape the crowds on the Mediterranean beaches on an Orb river canoe trip. This 145km long river runs through the Haute Languedoc Park Naturel and offers the chance for secluded, quiet picnics in stunning scenery.
