After today you will be seeing a lot more bikes on the streets of London as the city opens it’s cycle hire scheme.

The Barclays Cycle Hire Project will enable people to use bicycles stored at various docking points in central London.  The scheme is available to those who sign up for membership, they’ll receive a key which costs £3 with daily and annual memberships available to suit the user.

Over 11,000 people have signed up membership, whoever only 6000 cycles are initially available and only 300 of the 400 docking stations are in operation.
David Brown, Transport for London’s (TfL) surface transport managing director, said: ”This will revolutionise how we get around central London.”
He added that TfL and the Serco company, which is operating the scheme for TfL, would use the first month to see how Londoners got on with it.

London Assembly Green Party member Jenny Jones welcomed the scheme but added that there were concerns that need to be addressed. She said, ”The bikes should have locks and bigger baskets. A target date should be set for people to be able to use Oyster (travel) cards to pay for the bike hire.”
